Hi lovely one, I’m Julia

I trained as a clinical psychologist in South Africa and worked in the public and private health sectors there before moving to the UK with my family in 2016. I have more than12 years of experience working with individuals, couples and families. I run a psychotherapy practice in Godalming, Surrey and work as a relationship coach online.

I’ve worked with thousands of people at various life stages and experiences, and no matter what brings them to me, we always circle back to a client’s family of origin story.

Our early family experiences create a map for us, from which we both experience and respond to the world. Part of our work together is looking at this map, learning what is ours, what is our partner’s, or what we have inherited from our cultural and familial legacies.

We all carry with us a blend of complex family stories and I began to wonder what might have happened had my clients, or their parents, had they had more support earlier on in their stories.

I began reflecting on how little we are taught about how to choose life partners, raise children, how to communicate effectively, and how to cultivate a way of experiencing the world in a more connected and joyful way.

What if I could work with clients before they present to my therapy room, what if we could begin to break the cycles of unhealthy family legacies being passed down from generation to generation, from body to body?

There comes a point where we need to stop just pulling people out of the river. We need to go upstream and find out why they're falling in.” - Desmond Tutu

Grounded Families is my journey upstream, a compassionate and transformative approach to working with individuals and couples to break generational patterns of relating, communicating and being in the world. Allowing us to become more open to moments of joy in our everyday lives. Allowing us to be all-the-way-alive.

When I’m not busy working with clients, you can find me reading, writing my first book, walking in the woods, wild swimming with friends, or trying to grow stuff on my allotment. I’m a wildly optimistic-pragmatist, prone to awe and too many cups of tea.

I am an introverted-extrovert, which means I need lots of time with friends and family, AND I need all the recoup time afterwards. I live in Godalming with my husband, two kiddos and our wayward dog.

I’m so happy you’re here!
